Start your afternoon off in high society.  Built around the turn of the century by James Boyd, a steel and railroad magnate from Pennsylvania, and originally including more than 1,200 acres, this estate was named Weymouth because it reminded Boyd of Weymouth, England.  The Boyds entertained extensively and Weymouth became the center of a very lively social life in the 1920s and 1930s, with literary friends such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, Paul Green and Sherwood Anderson. Boyd became one of America's outstanding authors of historical novels, and this beautiful home now serves as the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame.  Visiting writers still use these accommodations for seclusion and inspiration.  Now you will have the opportunity to experience what social life was like for this family as your guide leads you through the historic home and the beautiful gardens.

For more information, visit the Weymouth Center website.

Historic Houses of Moore County

Now, step way back in time.  You will have an opportunity to visit three houses built from 1770 through 1821.  Guided tours will show you what life was like for early Scottish settlers in Moore County as you visit the Shaw House, the Britt Sanders Cabin, and the Garner House.   Admire both the construction of each of the homes and the efforts to restore them, as well as the many antiques and artifacts included in the homes.

Artists' League of the Sandhills

Conclude your afternoon by rubbing elbows with the artists.  Visit this non-profit organization in downtown Aberdeen that was established to promote interest in the visual arts by providing training courses, training workshops, and a friendly environment for artists to work.  Admire the works of dozens of artists that are prominently displayed throughout the building.   Stop and chat with local artist as they create their masterpieces, and watch as their creative talents come to life.

For more information, visit the Artists League of the Sandhills website.

House in the Horsehoe

Begin your afternoon dodging bullets fired by the whigs, or revolutionists as they were called, to repel the tories, or those still loyal to the King of England.  Imagine you are strolling the grounds of this historic home during 1781 as Colonel Philip Alston fought the notorious Daniel Fanning.  Examine the side of the home where bullet holes can still be seen.   Guided tours will bring it all to life for you, but the most exciting part of the visit will be live musket firing demonstrations.  This is one of North Carolina’s most notable Historic Sites.

Southern Supreme - Gourmet Specialties

Southern Supreme

Southern Supreme is known far and wide for its fruit cake (which actually tastes great!) and also for its gift baskets and other treats.

Now, get ready to treat your “sweet tooth.”  What started out in her garage as a hobby for Mrs. Berta Scott has now evolved into a world-wide business.  Her famous nutty fruit cakes were so popular she kept expanding her business until it now involves many of her family, and provides employment opportunities for many in the community.  The modern, spacious retail store offers a tasting area where you can sample a variety of products, including the famous fruitcake.  Although fruitcakes are not baked during the summer, many other products are.  If we are lucky we will see the kitchen staff in action, smell the aroma of fresh baked cookies, and maybe even sample some of them.  Plan to do some early Christmas shopping; this is a shopper’s paradise.

For more information about Southern Supreme visit  their website.

If time allows we will make a brief stop at Jugtown Pottery for some more shopping and to see how pottery is made.

Travel to the Thursday Night Cook-out:

As we travel back to Little River Golf Resort we can drop you off at the cook-out (and you would need to catch a ride back to the resort with someone else); OR, if you prefer, you may remain on the bus as it returns to the resort, and get your personal vehicle to travel to the cook-out.  There will not be a shuttle between the cook-out and the resort.
