Recognition and Awards Committee Report

2001 - 2002

Recognition and Awards Policy

There are 4 awards that the Recognition and Awards Committee is responsible for. The Distinguished Service Award for employees with more than 10 years of service (DSA); The Achievement Award for employees with less than 10 years of service (AA); The Service to Agriculture Award for someone who has made significant contributions to agriculture in NC or the region; and The Young Agent Scholarship Award. These awards have a different application deadline than the other awards programs. Official forms will be revised for 2003 and will be obtained from District Committee Chairs.

Until this year, our committee was responsible for a national award offered by NACAA called The Purcell Pinnacle Award. Applications should now be sent directly to NACAA. Information on this award is included in the Awards & Recognition issue of The County Agent Magazine.

Recognition and Awards Committee Policy Highlights:

A list of specific responsibilities for the committee members has been established.

Each district will continue to select awards recipients as they deem appropriate and effective.

An official procedure regarding submitting names for recognition has been implemented. Each district will send the names of their nominees to the State Chair. The State Chair will then forward the list onto Extension Administration to review. The State Chair will then notify the District Chairs of those approved and proceed with submitting nomination materials. This procedure will give each district the opportunity to be represented.

District Chairs will be responsible for sending completed nomination forms and other information to the State Chair.

Young Agent Scholarship Award and Service To Agriculture forms will remain unchanged. Our committee proposes to revise North Carolina s Nomination Forms for DSA's & AA's to use a narrative format and discontinue using our current DSA & AA Forms. The current national forms will be used for DSA's and AA's in addition to the new North Carolina forms.

The new forms will:

  1. Require a written narrative up to 3 single sided pages, double spaced, using a 10 point font.
  2. Narrative is suggested to answer in detail the questions asked on the current form.
  3. Optional: 1 letter of support from immediate supervisor.
  4. THE ONLY REQUIRED INFORMATION WILL BE THE NACAA FORM(S) AND THE NARRATIVE! SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS ARE DISCOURAGED.
  5. Each district will establish their own deadlines for having nominations submitted. The deadline to have all 2003 information to the State Chair will be October 31, 2002.
  6. Standards (such as providing completed application, submitting on time, staying within page limits, using proper format, etc) will be strictly enforced. Non compliance will result in disqualification of nomination for current year.
  7. To accomplish this, our committee will work with John Dorner to make all forms and relevant information available on NCACAA s web site.

The procedure for selecting Distinguished Service Award (DSA), Achievement Award (AA), Young Agent Scholarship Award (YASA), and Service to Agriculture recipients remains the same, except for new deadlines which will be established in July.
