2008 Committee Report

2000 - 2001

The 2008 Committee has had two planning meetings since the association voted at the annual meeting in Fayetteville to pursue a bid for the 2008 National Meeting. The committee has met with the Greensboro Visitors and Tourism Bureau (which is acting as our representative, complimentary) and is pursuing tentatively setting up the meeting at the Shearton 4-Seasons in Greensboro.

What we will get from the Hotel -

  • Free parking for guests driving in
  • Free shuttle service to and from the airport
  • We receive one complimentary room for each 50 rooms booked
  • On our high night, if we have 800 or more rooms booked we get all meeting rooms complimentary (The Greensboro Visitors and Tourism Bureau, in studying past meetings believes that this will be an easy goal, in fact they believe our high night will probably be around 1000 rooms.)

The following committee chairs have been elected/appointed/volunteered for from the committee:
Hospitality/Publicity (up to 2004 bid) - Bob Edwards
Finance - Lisa Wimpfheimer
Program - Danny Lauderdale
Tours - Norman Harrell
Program/Facilities - Sam Groce
*Other committe members and chairs will be appointed/elected as we get closer to 2004 and again in actual planning for 2008.

Date Setting: The following is the list of potential dates for the 2008 meeting

    1st - July 13 - 17, 2008 (Sunday - Thursday)
    2nd - July 20 - 24, 2008 (Sunday - Thursday)
    3rd - July 27 - 31, 2008 (Sunday - Thursday)

Factors used in determining order of dates

  • School opening (allowing for spouses and children to attend)
  • prior to major hurricane season
  • no conflict with 4th of July holiday

** It should be noted that 4-H, FCE and other university departments have been contact about any potential conflicts in scheduling. The two departments that may have potential conflicts have indicated that with this much planning time, they will be glad to work around us.

Through the efforts of the Greensboro Visitors and Tourism Bureau, we have our first choice of dates locked in with the Shearton 4-Seasons. If by some chance another group wants our dates and are willing to sign a contract, we will either have to contract or switch to another date. However, at this time we are required to sign nothing and do have first choice at our spoken for dates. If we receive the bid then we will be required to sign a contract with the hotel.

Respectfully submitted,
Sam Groce
Chair - 2008 National Meeting Bid Committee
