The Lewis Stillman Howe III Horticulture Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Lewis Stillman Howe III. Lewis was a dedicated educator and friend of the green industry. He was passionate about his work, an enthusiastic teacher of horticulture and loved plants. Lewis' energy was shared with all those whose lives he touched. Lewis started working for North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Wilson County, in 1989. In 1995, he served both Lenior and Wayne counties and at the time of his death was the horticulture agent in Wayne County. Lewis was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2000. He was cancer free when he unexpectedly died of a heart attack on Sept. 29, 2002.

The North Carolina County Agricultural Agents Association endowment goal of $15,000 is established by active and retired Extension personnel and people who work in the green industry in the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation to motivate and encourage horticulture Extension agents to develop their professional talent and skills, purse excellence in their work and broaden their educational experiences for successful careers with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. The amount of the scholarship is to be $500 annually.

At the October 2002 North Carolina Association of County Agricultural Agents board meeting, the board voted to include the "Lewis Stillman Howe III Horticulture Scholarship" available from the North Carolina Agricultural Agents Association endowment, under the selection process of the Horticulture Committee.

Purpose - The North Carolina Association of County Agricultural Agents Endowment is established to provide a scholarship to a horticulture Extension agent to attend a National professional improvement conference (such as SNA, IPPS, ASHS, Mid-Atlantic Horticulture Short Course) or for creating a teaching site for green industry personnel such as a Certified Plant Professional garden or Certified Landscape Technician site or for other purposes approved by the Horticulture committee that contribute to the professional development of a Horticulture Extension Agent. This scholarship was created to perpetuate Lewis Stillman Howe III name who was a horticulture extension agent from 1995 - 2002.

Applications must be submitted to the State Horticulture Chair by March 15 of each year. The State Horticulture Committee will select the first place winner and a runner up in case the winner is not able to accept the award. All nominees must be approved by the State Extension Director. The $500 award will be based on a reimbursement policy (ie. receipts must be sent to the horticulture chair to submit to NC State) that will be mailed to the winner after the recipient registers and attends the NCACAA State meeting as according to NCACAA policy.

Criteria for selection of recipients to receive award: To be considered for this award, agents shall have worked with commercial ornamental clientele and shall be active in the affairs of the professional Extension associations. An agent can receive this award only one time.

Selection of agent(s) shall be based on their application of interpersonal skills, growth potential, motivation, performance of duties, and progress made in carrying out a successful Horticulture program in their area of work and their involvement in their professional organization.

The recipient must be employed by the NCCES at the time of the presentation. If a recipient resigned before the Annual Meeting of NCACAA in the year in which he/she is to receive the award, the nominee will be ineligible to receive the award.

Each nominee should complete the official Lewis Stillman Howe III Horticulture Scholarship Award form for the current year. This form is available on the NCACAA website.

Lewis Stillman Howe III Horticulture Scholarship award winners will be listed in the Annual Report of the Association.
