Scholarship Auction

Would you like to contribute to the scholarship fund for the 2008 AM/PIC? A $1,000 contribution per member challenge has been made by the NCACAA State Board. This can be a direct $1,000 from each member or a combination of personal donations and sponsor donations.

How can the auction help? There will be a fund raising auction Wednesday night after the Riverboat Dinner Cruise. Any contribution to the scholarship auction will be counted toward each individual's $1,000 commitment. If an item is brought to the auction worth $300 and sold for $400, the person who brought the item gets credit for $300 and the person who purchased the item will get credit for $100. Golf Tournament, Magnolia Greens Golf Club, Leland, NC

Participants will play in a 4-man captains-choice golf tournament at Magnolia Greens Golf Club located 5 minutes from the Wilmington Hilton. The tournament will be a shotgun start beginning at 1pm. Magnolia Greens is a 27-hole facility designed by Tom Jackson with G-2 and L-93 bentgrass putting greens. Participants will need to provide their handicap to make teams. Participants should plan to arrive and register no later than 12:30pm. A short reception and prize give-away will immediately follow golf. Kayak Outing
Cost: $25.00 per person

Time: 2.5 - 3.0 hours

Participants will take a fantastic water kayaking tour from Wrightsville Beach to Masonboro Island. This will be a paddling kayak tour to see marine life and the back-water sounds behind Masonboro Island. The group will also tour the beach at Masonboro before departing back to Wrightsville Beach. Participants should plan to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and beach apparel. Participants should meet at Cape Fear Kayaks by 1pm to depart for the tour. Visit the Battleship North Carolina on a self-guided tour. Located just across the Cape Fear River from the Wilmington Hilton, the Battleship North Carolina is a great family tour of NC history. The self-guided tour includes portions of nine decks where you can enter gun turrets, inspect the bridge, and view the crew's quarters, sick bay, an engine room and much more. Discover how the ship was a floating city with places to sleep, eat, see movies, mail letters and get a hair cut. On the ship's main deck see one of the few remaining Vought Kingfisher float planes. In the ship's Wardroom admire the 120+ piece silver service and the Roll of Honor Room which memorializes the names of the 10,000 North Carolinians who gave their lives during World War II. Railroad Museum (on your own)

A special invitation is offered to attendees of the 2006 Ag Agent's meeting that is within a close walking distance from the hotel. By showing your nametag or by identifying yourself as being part of the Ag Agent's meeting you will be able to obtain $1.00 off admission to the Railroad Museum for each member of your family. Exhibits here interpret Wilmington's role as the center of railroad history with indoor displays, artifacts and the HO and Lionel model train exhibits. Climb aboard a steam locomotive and caboose. Fort Fisher:
Last major stronghold of the confederacy, Fort Fisher was the site of two major battles and finally fell January 15, 1865. Tour 1: Commercial Horticulture - Pender County - Wayne Batten

Participants will travel to the town of Burgaw, NC where they will visit the Thomas Tomato Farm. This farm produces 25 acres of trellis tomatoes and has been in operation for over 25 years. Tomato harvest will be in full swing and tour participants will have the opportunity to purchase some fresh produce to take with you. The next stop will be a Pender County blueberry farm. This crop contributes $5 million to the county economy and harvest will be underway. Participants will have the opportunity to see machine and hand harvest operations and market preparation. You may even get to sample a few berries and purchase some for the trip home. The town of Burgaw hosts the NC Blueberry Festival. This event draws over 15,000 people to town the last Saturday of June. There will be no additional fee for this tour. Tour 2: Beach Renourishment - New Hanover Co. - David Nash

Participants on this tour will have the opportunity to witness the results of a unique Extension program in Southeastern NC. The tour will visit a sea oat plant production facility in the town of Carolina Beach. The next stop will be a sea oats dune building project at the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area. This project was implemented to build a natural dune system using sea oat seedlings to protect the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. There will be no additional fee for this tour. Tour 3: Screen Gems and the New Hanover Extension Center Arboretum

Participants on this tour will have the opportunity to visit Screen Gems Studios (http://www.euescreengems.com/documents/northcarolina.html), a state of the art movie studio in Wilmington, NC. This will be a walking tour including the studio lot, sound stages and a brief movie. Screen Gems is famous for television series like Matlock, Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, Surface and several motion pictures.

The next stop will be a walking tour of the New Hanover County Extension Center Arboretum. The arboretum is a special seven acres in the heart of New Hanover County where homeowners and landscape professionals can discover the best plants for area landscapes. With over two-dozen individual gardens and demonstrations, the arboretum truly has something for everyone. Venture into the gathering garden where palms and hardy tropical plants welcome you to a lush and verdant world. See what's blooming in the perennial border or choose which grass you want for your lawn. Other gardens and displays include herbs, native plants, a Japanese garden, rose garden, deer resistant garden, butterfly border, children's garden, ability garden and greenhouses. There is an additional fee of $10.00 per person for this tour. This activity is suitable for ages 5 and higher. (55 persons max)

Tour 4: NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher Behind the Scenes Tour

This tour will visit the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher (http://www.ncaquariums.com). Participants will have the opportunity to take a self-guided tour to view the various aquariums, landscape, wildlife and programs at the Fort Fisher Aquarium. In addition, there will be a behind the scenes tour to learn about the maintenance and operation of the aquarium and the species that are found there.

There is an additional fee of $10.00 per person for the aquarium tour. This activity is suitable for ages 10 and up. (51 persons max)

Jungle Rapids

We will board the bus at 2:30 pm and arrive at Jungle Rapids around 3:00 pm where we will have an opportunity to enjoy the amusement park. Put on some sun screen and prepare to get wet as we enjoy the water park. The water park is fully-staffed with lifeguards and attendants and offers hot springs, a sundeck, chaise lounges, free floats, and lifejackets.

There will be some other choices for you to make as we finish up the evening with a pizza party. Registration for Jungle Rapids includes Water Park and a choice of two other activities. You may choose from the following:

Go Cart Grand Prix Racing must be 12 years old and at least 56 inches tall to participate

Laser Tag (8 years and above)

Jungle Rapids has also extended a discount offer for token notes (8 tokens) for an additional $1.00 each. Tokens have a value of $0.25 each making this a $2.00 value on each token note. In order to take advantage of this for the arcade area you will need to send some money with your kids.

We will return to the hotel by 8:30 pm.

Ferry Ride and Bald Head Island Tour
All aboard! Enjoy a ferry ride to Bald Head Island, North Carolina's southern most cape island. Here you will see the "Old Baldy Lighthouse, the Smith Island Museum of History and the Bald Head Village Chapel. Built in 1817, "Old Baldy" is North Carolina's oldest standing lighthouse, the second of three built on the island to guide ships across the Cape Fear Bar and into the river channel. While on the island, you'll see glimpses of miles of stunning forests and beaches. You'll find the absence of cars and the 18 mph speed limit of the electric golf carts refreshing.

Golf carts will be provided for the tour, minimal walking required.
