Western District Meeting Minutes
May, 1998


Minutes taken by John Dorner, Secretary/Treasurer

Date: May 28, 1998

Meeting was held at Ryans on Patton Ave. in Asheville, NC.

11:15 David Curtis opens meeting
Lunch
Invocation was given by Ross Young
Printout of web site info was passed around for review and corrections. Please review and send any corrections to John Dorner.

The minutes of the last meeting and treasure's report were reviewed and accepted.
There was discussion regarding the "Professional Improvement" funds ($200)from the State Board. David Curtis requested that the Professional Excellence and the Professional Training commitees come up with some recommendations for the use of these funds.

David Curtis polled those in attendance to see who was going to the state meeting (7) and the National (6 or 7 plus a few retired agents).

State Meeting Report
Bill Skelton gave a brief report - currently there are 190 people registered for the meeting in Atlantic Beach on June 22-23
John Dorner will attend the state board meeting in place of David Curtis and Ross Young.

National Meeting Report
First time attendees need to request the funds set aside ($3.00/member) for the most senior first time attendee. The most senior agent present planning on attending the National meeting this year was Alan Durden.

State Director's Ramblings
Bill Skelton gave an update on state and national level happenings. These included redistricting and the nomination of a Southern Region Vice Chairman for 2000

Redistricting Discussion
Motion made by Tom Harvey and seconded by Kenneth McCaskill that we endorse the change of state association district lines to allign with the NCCES administrative districts.

Misc. Notes
Ross Young gave a brief report on the P.I.L.D program that he attended.

Elections
Tom Harvey, acting committee chair, presented the "acting nominating committee's" report, nominating Jeff Seiler for Secretary/Treasurer, John Dorner as Vice Director and Ross Young as Director for 1998/1999. The motion was seconded by Kenneth McCaskill.< BR> Motion passed.


Post Script
Jeff Seiler has declined the nomination due to other commitments.
The item has been referred to the nominating committee. If you would be interested in serving as Secretary/Treasurer, please contact Steve West.


John Dorner made a recommendation that the Secretary and Treasure positions be separated and that the Treasurer's position be made a longer term and taken out of the rotation schedule. David Curtis recommended that the Nominating Committe consider such ac tion.

Recognition & Awards
The following people were nominated for awards:
DSA - Kenneth Reeves
District AA - Ross Young
Young Agent Scholarship - Brian Beer
Service to Agriculture - Allen McMurray (Jerry Moody, Avery County will handle the application.
Applications must be submitted by July 1st. Nominees can contact Johnny Hensley for application forms.

Misc. Notes
Ken Reeves introduced Tony McGaha, Area Dairy Agent

Bill Skelton proposed 10/8/98 for our next meeting to be hosted by Henderson County. Date and location were acceptable to most present. Time and exact location to be annouced later.

David Curtis asked that all members send Harvey Fouts professional Development ideas - ie: tours, ect.

Kenneth Reeves suggested that we get the meeting dates and locations to the retired agents in a letter when planned.

Bill Skelton gave an Extension Service Foundation report.

Meeting was adjourned for bison farm tour.
