Western District Meeting Minutes
May 1996


Minutes taken by Ross Young, Secretary/Treasurer

Date: May 23, 1996

Location: Haywood County Extension Center.

Introductions

Minutes approved as presented.

Discussion about election of officers. Alan Caldwell, Secretary-Treasurer, moving to Caldwell.
Nominating committee: Steve West, Marvin Owings, and Johnny Hensley stated that two positions needed to be chosen.

Gary Hyatt presented treasurer's report that Alan had provided. Passed.

Gary Hyatt discussed organizational study of NCCES.

Professional tour for agents was discussed. Tentative schedule 3rd or 4th week in August; week of 26th better. Time: 9:00 a.m., August 27th, 9:00 - 5:00; discussions - lunch included. Some possibilities were:

Steve West discussed State Fund Raising effort. Stated that our suggestions were sent in.

Committees:

State chairs: Lanny Hass, Constitution and By-Laws; Mike Hobbs

Steve West gave the Nomination Committee Report:

J.D. moved; Tom seconded to close nominations for vice-president.

The new officers are: David Curtiss - vice-president; Ross Young - Secretary-Treasurer

The county of the month - Agent will work up the proposal. Joe Palmer voted in.

Maurice recommended that the other two should be brought up next year. Marvin second to accept the nominations. Vote passed. Discussion: Proposals must be by the book. "Follow the rules"

Gary adjourned for Lunch.

The meeting reconviened at 1:00 p.m.

Lanny Hass announced that the Tennessee Farm Family Tour will be in July in WNC

Constitution and By-Laws Committee report:
Mitch Smith in Pitt County sent a letter proposing that award winners be present in order to get award. p.43, "Recognition - Awards" of the book is where it should be added. Discussion of DSA and AA award winners. Kenneth recommended that only DSA & AA Award winners be present. Nothing presented to state.

Specialists as members of Association was discussed. State / Nationally, Hg con. Discussion: nothing voted on.

Kenneth moved that we send a letter to the President of the Association stating that we prefer a consistent title. "Extension Agent, Agriculture, 4-H, CRD, Family & Consumer Education with four program areas. Tom Harvey seconded it. Question called for by Mike Pitt, voted, passed unanimously.

Steve West - "Farm Land Use Preservation" There is some money available somewhere. Steve threw it out to think about. Gary suggested that those counties that have it pass around their ordinance plans so the rest of us can see it.

Gary discussed stress day. Fishing at Fontana Lake. Interest is here to try. Gary will find out possible dates and e-mail to us.

Tom Harvey moved to adjourn. Tom Butzler seconded.
