Western District Meeting Minutes
May 10, 2000
Waynesville, NC

Minutes submitted by Steve Duckett, Secretary

Preliminaries

The meeting was called to order by President John Dorner at 10:20 a.m. Steve West welcomed the group to the new Haywood County extension office, and then conducted a tour of the new facility for the group.

After reconvening the meeting, the minutes were read by Secretary Steve Duckett. Johnny Hensley moved that the minutes be approved as read, and Kenneth McCaskill seconded the motion. The minutes were approved as read. John Dorner then went over the treasurer's report, and Johnny Hensley moved to accept the report, and Alan Durden seconded the motion. The Treasurer's report was approved.

The next item of business was the introduction of new agents. Diane Ducharme, the new horticulture agent in Buncombe County introduced herself and gave the group a brief sketch of her experiences. Randy Collins, the new agriculture agent in Graham County, introduced himself and also briefly described his experiences. These agents were encouraged to attend the state meeting. The group then went around introducing themselves to the new agents. John Dorner then asked all agents to make sure their information was correct on the membership list.

Old Business

The first item of old business discussed was the status of our financial recommendations to the state board. These have been forwarded to the board for their consideration. The F.A.C.E. agents thanked us for supporting their state meeting. John Dorner then reminded everyone about the upcoming state meeting and asked who will be attending. Next John reminded the group that the national meeting will be held in Jackson, Mississippi on August 6-10. Alan Durden then updated the group on plans for us hosting the state meeting in 2001. He passed a list around of committees and responsibilities for the meeting, and a tentative agenda. The 2001 state meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Sun-Spree in Asheville. We have a good structure and are well along in preliminary planning. The dates for the state meeting in 2001 will be June 26-28. There was some discussion on the committee assignments to clarify responsibilities. The upshot was that the tour committee and others who need transportation should get their needs to the transportation committee so they could be coordinated efficiently. The group's next action was to appoint Jim Ray as chair of the retired agents activity committee.

NEW BUSINESS

John Dorner then asked for a report from the nominating committee. Steve Duckett reported that the committee had nominated Ross Young as Treasurer and Stanley Holloway as Secretary. Steve Duckett would move into the Vice President position, and Alan Durden would move into the President's position. Tom Harvey moved that we accept these nominations, and Tony McGaha seconded the motion.

The group approved the following slate of officers for 2001:
Alan Durden, President
Steve Duckett, Vice President
Stanley Holloway, Secretary
Ross Young, Treasurer

Johnny Hensley then suggested we discuss the summer activity. This activity was referred to the member service committee for planning. After some discussion, it was agreed to tentatively set up the activity for Friday July 14 at Lake Chatuge in Haysville, with Friday July 22 as a back-up date. Maurice and Tony will coordinate this activity with Kenneth McCaskill and Silas Brown. It was suggested we could communicate on details by e-mail and firm up the date.

Johnny Hensley then mentioned that no one had applied for the young agent scholarship this year. Terri Scruggs and Phillip Hedden were encouraged to apply for this award. Johnny then mentioned that we need a nominee for service to agriculture award for 2001. Jeff Vance applied for the A.A. and Bill Skelton applied for the D.S.A. Phillip Hedden was then nominated for the Young Agent Award. Kenneth McCaskill made the nomination, and it was seconded by Tom Harvey. These award applicants were unanimously approved by the group. John Dorner then opened the floor for committee reports. There were no reports at that time.

The group then adjourned for lunch. Following the meal, the group broke up by subject areas to share program information and prioritize critical program needs that the group foresaw. The upshot of this session was that a committee was formed, chaired by Terri Scruggs, to look into ways to help address the needs of tobacco farmers who are facing uncertainty from the adverse developments in the tobacco arena. The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
