The meeting was called to order by President Billy Dunham. He indicated that the agenda included two items: selecting a representative from North Carolina to be our Southern Region vice director of NACAA (2 year term). That person will move up to Southern Regfion Director (2 year term). Our other item of business will be district lines - whether to change to be the same as Extension Administrative Districts, stay like we are, or do something else. Everyone should have received notice from their NCACAA district directors of the two agenda items. District directors were notified and asked to send the information on to members in their districts. The two individuals who had expressed interest in representing our association as southern region vice director were George Stancil and Fred Miller. They gave presentations. George indicated that responsibilities would be to take minutes at regional meetings and attend one state meeting the first year. There have been changes in our state association. We hosted the national meeting and set the standards to follow. North Carolina has one of the largest attendances at national meetings. It is important to be sincere and strong when presenting a case and stay in control. He believes in the association and has attended 10 national meetings. He is someone who will attend meetings and represent NC. He has served on the national board as chair of the 4-H and youth committee, so he has national name recognition, which is important. He understands the national board and its connection to the state. He is a good communicator, providing information in many forms. He has served as a federation representative in several capacities and has received numerous state, regional, and national awards. Fred Miller indicated that the position involved more than just the regional vice-director's job. Down the road the candidate needs to be suitable as a national officer as well. There may be a long term commitment. He has name recognition with the names of Fred and Miller that could be used in a campaign. After much soul searching, he decided he had the time to serve as southern region vice director/director. He handles stress well. The first day on the job he had to do a radio program - a live call-in show. He has the training to represent North Carolina well and will say what needs to be said. He has gone through the state NCACAA officers rotation. He has attended southern region officers meetings and 2 Public Issues Leadership Development Conferences. He has met with the credentials committee of NACAA for Ken Bateman on behalf of the NC Assocaition. He has attended all national meetings since 1988 except for one. We may want to put on another national meeting (in 2008?). He feels he can handle the job. There were no questions for either George or Fred. The next issue involved redistricting for NCACAA Districts: Tochange districts along Extension Administration lines (7 districts) or to stay as we are. A vote "for" would change NCACAA districts to be consistent with the new 7 Extension Districts. This change would take effect at the 1999 NCACAA State Meeting. A vote "against" would keep the NCACAA districts as they are now with 8 NCACAA Districts. Other suggestions could be in the form of a write-in. One suggestion was to go to 5 districts since there are 5 DSA AWards. Marjorie commented that having different district sturctures for NCACAA and Extension Administration was confusing and was harder for the secretary to keep up with who was in which district. A motion was made to call for the question. It was seconded. Ballots were handed out and vote taken. Results are as follows:
Lisa Wimpfheimer, John Dorner, and Alan Harper assisted with the ballot count. Meeting was adjourned. Submitted by Marjorie Rayburn, NCACAA Secretary |
