Tour 22:
Appalachian Agriculture

Tour sponsored by SARE.

Come explore thriving agricultural enterprises in the mountainous region of North Carolina. We will begin by visiting Brushy Mountain Bee Farm. Brushy Mountain supplies professional and hobby beekeepers with the supplies and knowledge to best preserve the valuable agricultural resource of honeybees. We will tour the facility and learn about beekeeping techniques.  Our next stop will be What Fir Tree Farm. Farm owners Kirby and Nathaniel Maram will share their unusual story of how they became Christmas tree farmers overnight, all with the backdrop of one of the best mountain views in the state. Tour the fields, Christmas shop and enjoy this agritourism destination. Moretz's Mountain Orchard will finish the day. Tour a 70-year old heirloom apple orchard featuring over 90 different varieties and alternative crops such as cold-hardy kiwis and Paulownia trees.  Long travel.
